what is single-origin hemp and why does it matter?

If you're familiar with the phrase single-origin, it’s probably because you are a bit of a coffee connoisseur, which makes sense given that the coffee industry is the industry that most commonly utilizes single-origin practices. However, if you’re not familiar with the phrase, single-origin hemp, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered on everything you need to know about it and why it matters.

When single-origin practices are used by producers in the coffee industry, what they're doing is sourcing all of the beans used to produce a coffee product from a single farm. This could be one cup or a whole bag of coffee. The reason that coffee producers are utilizing this method when sourcing their beans is to create consistent flavor and aroma profiles. Without single-origin practices, coffee producers typically have to roast their mixed source beans in order to create a consistency similar to that of the smooth single-origin's.

At Pachamama, we love the correlation between using single-origin methods and the result of a consistent, high-quality product. So much so, that we decided to take it and adopt the same methods to the creation of our full spectrum hemp extracts used to craft our CBD products.

why does consistency matter when it comes to CBD?

growing high quality hemp

The entire life of a CBD product begins in the soil. From the soil its seeds are planted in, to the amount of light each plant receives, several factors affect a hemp plant’s properties — and with that, determine the properties of a final CBD product. Likewise, different hemp strains also contain different amounts of their active compounds like terpenes, cannabinoids and other phytochemicals. Unfortunately, some CBD manufacturers are only using single-origin practices up to a certain point. They use single-origin to grow their hemp, but during the extraction process, they will still use a combination of different strains together as a way to produce more hemp extract to meet demand.

We know what you might be thinking. CBD is just CBD, right? Not exactly. Full process single-origin CBD products have an added measure of reliability. By applying the single-origin practices common to coffee to our hemp, we ensure that our products provide constant results. That means if you purchase one of our full spectrum products today, and then the same product a month from today, you are guaranteed to receive a product that contains all of the beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes that were in your first purchase.

Making single-origin CBD products is also often the sign of a trustworthy brand. Jackie Bowen, executive director of the Clean Label Project — a nonprofit that helps bring transparency to consumer product labeling — says that brands that strive for consistency are often the most trustworthy.

“Brands that embrace the concept of know your farmer, know your food, have a better chance of delivering a higher quality product,” says Bowen, who previously spent 15 years working in the product quality and safety world before coming to Clean Label Project. “Brands that choose to stay involved and make sure they maintain high levels of consistency and quality generally deliver higher quality products. And you see this across all consumer packaged goods, whether it’s infant formula, pet food, protein powder or CBD.”

As a matter of fact, we’re honored to state that we are one of three CBD brands to have received the Purity Award from the Clean Label Project for our commitment to transparency and quality in all of our products. Only given to companies after thoughtful consideration and rigorous lab-testing, this is just one way we convey our character.

Now whether you’re looking at a cup of coffee or a CBD product, you will know single-origin is an indicator of a brand that is committed to providing you with only the best for your well-being. And that’s exactly why we will continue to utilize a single-origin method.
