this is the difference between cbd oil and a cbd tincture

What’s the difference between CBD oil and a CBD tincture? This is one of the most common questions people new to the world of CBD often ask — and even some of those who have been long-time CBD advocates. So we’re here to break it down for you.

cbd oil vs cbd tinctures

There are lots of CBD products on shelves these days — and we do mean a lot. With so many choices, it can be difficult to know the difference between them all. It doesn’t help that there is little consistency in the labeling of CBD products, and terms like CBD oil and CBD tinctures get used interchangeably. But when you look at two small, brown, liquid-filled bottles, and one label says CBD oil and the other says CBD tincture, what's really the difference, right?

CBD oil is mostly a catch-all term for any liquid-based products blended with CBD extracts. This includes everything from CBD-filled capsules, to CBD topicals and CBD tinctures.
CBD tinctures are most often sold in a small, brown, dropper bottle and are probably the most popular form of CBD on the market. Some brands will label their tinctures simply as CBD oil, and, generally, when people refer to CBD oil, what they're really talking about are CBD tinctures.

so, what is a tincture anyway?

Strictly speaking, a tincture is nothing more than an herbal-extract infused liquid. Traditionally, you make tinctures by soaking things like barks, roots, berries , and other plant materials in alcohol or vinegar for an extended time. It’s an incredibly easy and cost-effective way to make infused drinks and liquids, and has been used for centuries to produce all-natural remedies.

While the traditional method of creating tinctures is a great way to make infused seltzer drinks or home remedies, it isn’t the best way to make CBD tinctures. There are a couple of reasons for this. The first is that this method makes a product that doesn’t taste very good. Sure, alcohol-based CBD tinctures can bring wonderful earthy, grassy notes to a or when added to food, but they probably aren’t something you’ll want to take on their own.

However, the real problem with alcohol-based CBD tincture is that they aren’t as effective as tinctures made using modern, more advanced methods. You’re not going to be able to pull as much CBD from the hemp plant by soaking it in alcohol as you would by using other extraction methods. Ultimately, this means CBD tinctures made with the traditional alcohol extraction method likely won’t give you the relief and effects you’re looking for.

To be fair, there are very few, if any, major CBD brands using this old-school alcohol-infusion method to make CBD tinctures. Instead, the industry-standard these days is to use supercritical CO2, or other solvents to extract CBD from hemp plants. This method isn’t without its shortcomings, either. Using this method to extract CBD comes with the potential of exposing the CBD to contaminants, which can make their way into the final product. Aside from that, the relatively long time and high temperatures it takes to extract CBD this way will actually damage the extracts, reducing the concentration of CBD and other cannabinoids in the final product.

These are exactly the reasons why here at Pachamama, we innovated a whole new way of extracting CBD. We use a chemical-free extraction method that works by exposing the hemp to a short burst of heated air. This allows us to entirely prevent the possibility of chemical exposure during the extraction process and means that our CBD extracts have the highest possible concentration of CBD and other super beneficial cannabinoids.
