does cbd expire?

Will your CBD oil go bad if you hold on to it for too long? If you’re the kind of person who makes CBD a part of their daily wellness routine, either to help you recover from post-workout soreness, or to help you re-center after a busy day, you’ll go through a bottle of CBD oil long before you reach its best before date. But, if you consume CBD oil less frequently, one bottle might last you quite a while. So, how long is too long to keep a single bottle of CBD oil?

does cbd expire

If you let your CBD oil sit long enough, it will start to degrade. Over time, the CBD, and other super-beneficial compounds found in your CBD oil, will breakdown, reducing the oil’s effectiveness. An older bottle of CBD simply isn’t going to give you the same kind of relief that a fresh batch would. It’s a lot like the way tea and coffee begin to lose their flavor and wellness properties as they age, so it’s important to understand the right amount of CBD oil for you.

While old CBD oil won’t work as well as it once did, it’s still completely safe to consume. CBD oil doesn’t become dangerous if it sits around too long, so there’s no need to be concerned about getting sick from a bit of old CBD oil.

how long does cbd last?

There are a few things that determine how long a bottle of CBD oil is good for. How you store it, the way it was processed and the ingredients used in the oil will all affect the shelf life of your CBD oil. Generally, though, a sealed bottle of CBD oil is good for up to two years if stored properly. It’s important to note that you should use open bottles of CBD within six months.

how to store your cbd

To get the longest life possible out of your CBD oil, store it the same way you would any cooking oil — meaning limiting its exposure to heat, light and air.

We recommend keeping your CBD oil in a cool and dark place. Your pantry or kitchen cupboards are a great place to keep CBD oil, but make sure that you keep your CBD away from sources of heat — like your stove — if you choose to keep it in the kitchen. Keeping CBD in the bathroom may seem convenient as well, but the frequent temperature fluctuations caused by hot showers can cause your CBD oil to degrade more quickly.
If you have open cupboards or prefer to keep your CBD oil out on the counter for convenience, keep your CBD oil in a dark bottle. Dark-colored bottles will help limit the amount of light your CBD is exposed to, thus extending its lifespan.

If you’re looking to store CBD for extended periods, or if you live in a particularly warm climate, you might want to consider keeping your CBD in the refrigerator. Just remember that if you choose to keep it in the fridge, your CBD oil may thicken, which can make it a little more difficult to administer. This can be easily remedied, however, by letting your CBD oil come to room temperature before using.

And whatever you do, do not leave your CBD oil in the car. We totally get it if you like to keep a bit of CBD oil with you when you’re on the go, but leaving your CBD oil sit in a hot car all day is a sure-fire way to ruin it.

how to tell if cbd oil is past its prime

As we established earlier, old CBD oil certainly isn’t bad for you, but it won’t provide the strongest effects (and might have no effects at all) once the expiration date hits. If you’re concerned that your CBD is getting a little too old, here are some signs to look for.

Color
CBD oil that starts to look cloudy or begins to darken is probably showing its age. However, if you have been storing your CBD oil in the fridge and find it has started to cloud-up, don’t throw it away just yet. Cold storage can cause CBD oil to change in color and consistency, so make sure you let it return to room temperature before you make any final decisions. If your CBD oil is still cloudy after you’ve let it warm up, it may be time to toss it out.

Smell and Taste
Smell and taste are probably the two best ways to determine whether it’s time to get a new bottle of CBD. If the way your CBD oil smells or tastes changes at all, that’s a strong indicator that the CBD oil isn’t very fresh. You want to taste the hemp in CBD oil, so if that’s lacking after the bottle has been sitting around, it’s time to restock your CBD supply.

Of course, buying the right amount of CBD you need is the best way to ensure you always have the freshest stuff. Instead of keeping a stockpile of CBD oil at home, try to buy more CBD only when you’re running low.
